Most Davidic or Messianic dances are done in a ring - there is no leader and all the focus goes upwards, symbolising worship to God. Men and women danced together, although in Israeli culture they tend to dance separately.
Why is it called Davidic dance?
The events surrounding King David bringing the Ark of the Covenant up to Jerusalem are retold in the Bible in 2nd Kings, chapter 6, starting at verse 14. In the Good News Bible it says that "David danced with all his might to honour the Lord".
In the original Hebrew texts, five different words are used in this passage to describe the way David moved; dancing, rotating, jumping, whirling, skipping. Sadly in the English translations much is lost when describing joyful worship, which was always done with dance and movement. Dance is implied in the word 'praise' and the word for dance in Aramaic, the language Jesus spoke, is the same as rejoice. so next time you read the word 'rejoice' think dance!
